Need essay help and advice? Many college admission tests have an essay component. This page explains what type of essay you may be asked to write and tells you what examiners are looking for in your essay.
Remember that when writing any essay, it is useful to prepare an essay outline and essay notes in advance. Essay planning is very important step in writing a good essay paper.
Types of essays:
Different colleges ask for different types of essays. Your essay format may be one of the following:
1) Opinion essay: For this type of essay, you will be asked to agree or disagree with a statement. This essay format is sometimes called the argument essay or argumentative essay.
2) Discursive essays: Discursive essays are descriptive or informative essays.
3) Comparative essay: These are also called compare and contrast essay topics.
4) Personal experience essay: Describe a personal experience you have had.
5) Hypothetical essay: “Hypothetical” means that you will have to imagine something, like being famous.
6) Cause and effect essay: Essay topics for these types of essays include smoking essays, health essays, or other controversial essay topics.
Note that essay topics do not include the narrative essay, illustration essay, politics essay, history essay, informative essay topics, or persuasive essay topics.
Essay structure:
Examiners look at the five following aspects of your written work if you are asked to write an essay as part of the admissions process:
1. Mechanics – “Mechanics” means grammar. So, the examiners will look to see whether your essay has any grammatical mistakes.
2. Structure – This refers to the structure of your individual sentences. The examiners want to see that you can use a good variety of sentence structures that contain a wide array of verb tenses.
3. Organization – The examiners also look to see whether your entire essay is well-structured. Your essay should have a good introductory paragraph that contains a thesis statement, also known as the statement of purpose of the essay. You should finish the essay with a strong concluding paragraph. In addition, the paragraphs of your main body should should be well-organized, using phrase linkers and subordinating and coordinating conjunctions.
4. Development – You need to develop your ideas in your essay. This means that you need to give reasons and examples to support your viewpoints.
5. Focus – The message of your essay must be clear. Your essay must demonstrate a logical progression of thought and have a good written flow. You should not discuss items that are only loosely related or unrealted to the essay topic.
